Glasgow Airport

Located 8 miles west of Glasgow city center, by the towns of Paisley and Renfrew in Renfrewshire, is the Glasgow Airport. It was the first airport in Scotland to handle over one million passengers in one month, which occurred in July of 2004. The Glasgow Airport handled approximately 8,795,727 passengers in 2007, making it the second busiest airport in Scotland. It is also the eighth busiest airport in the United Kingdom. Currently, there are plans to expand the Glasgow Airport due to an expectation of passenger increase to over 24 million by 2030.

The Glasgow Airport is owned and run by BAA, the owner of six other United Kingdom airports. The BAA is also self owned by an international consortium that is led by Spanish Ferrovial Group. The Glasgow Airport is a hub for easyJet, Flyglobespan and Loganair. It is also the home for British Airways maintenance facilities. The Glasgow Prestwick Airport is also branded as a Glasgow destination. It is located 29 miles from the city center and it has mostly low cost airlines.

The Glasgow Airport was taken over by the British Airport Authority (BAA) in 1975. The BAA became BAA plc when it was transferred from a public sector to a private sector in 1980. The British Airport Authority then consolidated the airport portfolio by selling the Glasgow Prestwick Airport. The Glasgow Airport restrictions were removed and the operators of the transatlantic moved from Prestwick right away. The Glasgow Airport was then named the Glasgow International Airport. A massive redevelopment plan was formed by the British Airport Authority in 1989.

A terminal building extension was built by creating a new structure over the original Basil Spence building, which was inside the new structure. The concrete arches originally there looked onto the Caledonia Road, but now it forms a façade in the check point area. There are now 38 gates in the Glasgow Airport, which can now hold a capacity of up to nine million passengers each year.
